UM LOWE ART MUSEUM’S ART LAB OFFERS STUDENTS
A CHANCE TO WORK BEHIND THE SCENES
WORKS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION EXAMINE
PERSPECTIVES ON ISLAMIC ART |
|
The Lowe Art Museum, in partnership with the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Miami, presents Women, Windows and the Word: Diverging Perspectives on Islamic Art, the third exhibition in the ArtLab @ The Lowe series, on view in the Richard and Shelley Bermont Focus Gallery through April 22, 2012. The Lowe’s innovative ArtLab program provides UM faculty and students the opportunity to organize an annual exhibition drawn from the Lowe’s permanent collection. The students work directly with objects from the museum’s collection of nearly 18,000 works of art, producing original research and curating a thematic exhibition that will be on display for a full calendar year.
For the Spring 2011 semester, Dr. Karen R. Mathews, Lecturer in the Department of Art and Art History in the College of Arts and Sciences, and her museum studies students explored the complex theme of Islamic art, concentrating on three distinct but intertwining themes: the role of Muslim women as creators and subjects of art, Western views of the Islamic world, and the importance of decoration and the written word. As a group, the seven students who enrolled in ArtLab @ The Lowe (ARH 511) selected the themes for the exhibition, determined the works of art that best represented the topics examined, researched objects and wrote didactic materials, and designed the exhibition space from selecting paint colors to determining object placement within the gallery. |

Dragon Productions presents -The Memory of Water |
|
The Memory of Water
by Shelagh Stephenson
It’s remembering which helps three sisters survive the despair of
losing their mother and come to terms with their own lives. From start to finish
The Memory of Water is a whirl-wind of emotions, bouncing from hilarious hysterics
to twisting sorrow and pain. In the end, it’s very simple: sometimes a good laugh,
a good cry and a good hug are the best therapy.

About BETWEEN HERE AND THERE: Modern and Contemporary Art from the Permanent Collection |
|
BETWEEN HERE AND THERE focuses on the cultures of the Atlantic Rim the Americas, Europe and Africa from which the vast majority of Miami residents hail. Included within this broader framework will be the work of a number of artists residing in South Florida, many of whom are paradigms of this intercultural dialogue.
BETWEEN HERE AND THERE opened a remarkable installation by Tom's Saraceno, the Argentine representative to this year's Venice Biennale. Galaxies Forming Along Filaments, Like Droplets Along the Strands of a Spider's Web, 2008, is the prototype for Saraceno's Venice installation; it was purchased last year by MAM's Collectors Council and is being displayed at Miami Art Museum for the first time. The installation will be the initial offering in the Anchor Gallery, a space that will feature regularly changing presentations of large-scale works from the collection. |

realizes that their relationship may not
survive a holiday in Sardinia. Maren Ade’s
brilliant sophomore effort should be placed
